Saskatchewan Housing Benefit

Anyone meeting the criteria can apply

The Saskatchewan Housing Benefit, delivered by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), helps eligible renters with their shelter costs (rent and utilities). The Saskatchewan Housing Benefit is co-funded by the Government of Canada and Government of Saskatchewan under the National Housing Strategy.


Eligibility


The Saskatchewan Housing Benefit is available to Saskatchewan renters who:

• pay 35 per cent or more of before tax household income on shelter costs;

• have less than $300,000 in household assets; and

• have an annual before tax household income at or below the Annual Income Limit:

Renters are not eligible for the benefit if they:

• receive support from another Government of Saskatchewan income assistance or training program (such as Saskatchewan Income Support, Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability, Provincial Training Allowance, Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement, etc.;

• rent from a housing authority under the Social Housing Program;

• are a sponsored newcomer to Canada; or

• are a full-time post-secondary student.


Shelter Costs


Shelter costs are the total amount a renter pays for rent and utilities. When applying, renters can claim their average monthly utility costs and their monthly rent that is on the lease agreement.


Other Important Details


• Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

• The benefit is available for 12 months. Renters may continue to receive the benefit longer than 12 months if they remain eligible and funding is available.

• This funding does not apply to on-reserve housing, licesned facilities or rental housing not covered under

The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 (not including co-operative housing).
